Beginner Bonsai Trees: The 5 Easiest To Care For

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By April Kerr Beginner bonsai trees should all have one thing in common - they should all be easy to look after. Although the art of the bonsai is often seen as one which is extremely difficult and takes many years to master, this should not put off anyone new to bonsai growing. There are a number of species which are very hardy, can withstand various light conditions and don’t need to be monitored as if it were a hospital patient. These include: Cherry Blossom - Many bonsai trees are considered to be either indoor or outdoor species, however the cherry blossom is one bonsai which can fit into both categories. Not only that but they are especially beautiful. Azalea - The most common species you will find are the satkuzi azalea and the kurume azalea. They also have very beautiful flowers which will brighten up any garden. Cotoneaster - There are over 200 varieties of cotoneaster however the most popular for bonsai purposes are horizontalis, Microphyllus and Compacta Nana. These plants should be kept outdoors, and although they are generally very hardy plant, you will need to protect them from the winter frost. Juniper - Whenever most people think of a bonsai tree it is the juniper plant to springs to mind and is commonly referred to as the “Karate Kid”. Japanese Maple - Although this is not a flowering bonsai, the leaves more than make up for it, ranging from tones of gold to red. This article is simply an introduction to anyone thinking of growing bonsai trees. It is important that you read up as much as possible on each variety to make sure you are buying the bonsai that is right for you. Just because they are the easiest of bonsai to care for does not mean you should neglect them. They will still need watering, feeding, pruning and re-potting, however this should be easy enough for any beginner bonsai grower. April Kerr writes for internet site Bonsai Tree Care. Her favourite bonsai is the Cherry Blosom however she also has written descriptions on how to care for many other bonsai trees. The Addiction Of Cosmetic Surgery For Women

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Sky Joe Cosmetic surgery for women, has an effect similar to certain mood enhancing drugs. It can seduce you like a swarthy stranger with a French accent and a wicked smile. Diving head first into addiction is always a lingering danger. There are inherent risks in becoming a cosmetic surgery junkie’. Women can go to great lengths to achieve physical perfection but cosmetic surgery for women should not be looked upon as a fashion statement, fad or craze similar to Yoga. The business of beauty has a tendency to stimulate a wave of narcissism in its zeal to stamp out the stigma of ageing. There is a fine line between self-improvement and self-obsession. Too much of a good thing can be a disaster, just witness some of Hollywood’s most famous faces that have been pulled, stretched or filled to the max. One of the most recognizable celebrities, Michael Jackson, has definitely made cosmetic surgery a favorite pastime of his. The other side of the coin is that having multiple procedures is not quite as radical as it sounds. A woman who began with Botox and had her eyes done at 40, a lower facelift at 45 and at 50 is contemplating an upper face and browlift, is not an addict’. Addiction to cosmetic surgery for women occurs when you are driven by forces greater than your own judgement to continuously tinker around with parts of your face to make yourself look different, better or prettier, when your features are reasonably fine as they are. There are two broad categories of cosmetic surgical procedures: surgery for change and surgery for ageing. Cosmetic surgery that is undertaken to reverse the signs of aging is very different from those that are intended to make you look different. Some common examples of such cosmetic surgery procedures include eyelid surgery, facelifts or browlifts. On the other hand, cosmetic surgery that changes one’s appearance usually consists of nasal refinements, cheek augmentation, lip lift, chin implants and jaw implants. Although it is just as common to become obsessed with reversing every line and wrinkle as they turn up, surgery undertaken to change your look is infinitely more radical. When you keep transforming yourself, you will eventually lose your sense of identity, of who you really are as an individual. In such a case, cosmetic surgery for women is actually not advisable as it has inevitably caused them to loss your self-identity. Holy Spirit POWER!

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Michael Tummillo A Christian friend came over asking that several of us pray for her. Despite doing all the “right” Christian things, she had been entertaining doubts about her faith. In the course of our prayer, as I was reminding her of what Scripture says about how God sees her, in a gruff tone of voice, with furrowed brow, she scolded me, speaking in the third person, “She doesn’t deserve it! She doesn’t deserve it!” In a couple of hours, by the Power of the Holy Spirit, she was free from demonic bondage with a total change of countenance and has, since then, moved forward with marriage and ministry. On an Easter Sunday morning, as I was attending a Baptist church service, a man sat praying, head bowed, as the congregation headed for the exits. I approached him and asked if I might pray. He ignored me. I laid my hand on his shoulder to pray. The moment I touched him, he bolted upright, began swaying like a cobra about to strike, and started growling as he pointed, “I hate him! I hate her! I hate this church!” My attempts to minister were interrupted by well-meaning people asking if he needed medication or asking if they should call an ambulance. When the man became unable to open his mouth to speak, I commanded the spirit to release his tongue. Instantly, he was able to understand me then and speak intelligibly in response to me. I told him I was available for further ministry by the Holy Spirit but it was obvious there was no faith present to deliver him at that moment. I made him aware that, until he got help, this WAS his Christian life and he WOULD experience these manifestations again. I left only to be bombarded with questions throughout the week by those who were there. The young man, it turned out, was a much-beloved seminarian. Last week, as a group of us were praying, the Holy Spirit showed me a vision of a new attendee standing with tears in her eyes, in the middle of a Civil War battlefield, dressed in a Confederate soldier’s uniform, looking at her spouse, dressed in Union blue. As I shared this vision after our prayer time, the woman buried her face in her hands and cried. Her close friend nudged me and whispered, “You read her mail.” On another occasion, a Christian business woman contacted me requesting prayer over one of her many facilities across Texas. This particular facility was not prospering at all and she could not help but consider closing its doors. That particular location had an openly lesbian manager which attracted openly gay employees. I went on a Thursday night with ateam. She met us there. We prayed and, within ten days, the facility’s numbers were improving already. The lesbian manager couldn’t understand it. In a memo I saw, she wrote, “We must be living right.” A week ago, the manager resigned as did several of the most blatantly gay employees. I could write many personal encounters like these, moments when the Holy Spirit took control, flushed out an unsuspecting demon, healed, delivered, set free or came through with a vision, word of wisdom or word of knowledge. He is no respecter of persons; the gifts He has shared with me, He wants to share with you. Question is, are you willing? Do you desire more? WE ARE SPIRIT BEINGS HAVING AN EARTHLY EXPERIENCE. WE ARE ALIENS. We have no permanent citizenship in this world. Though we are citizens of the United States, the reality is that, as a Christian, our citizenship is in Heaven (Phil 3:20). As the book of Hebrews says, “Here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city which is to come” (Heb. 13:14) For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding. (1 Chron 29;15) WE ARE ENAGED IN A SPIRITUAL WAR - a term not found in Scripture, but the concept is taught. Mankind is caught in the midst of a spiritual war with the holy God and His angels on one side and the evil Satan and his demons on the other. (2 Cor 10:3-5) “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (Eph 6:11-12) Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Rev 12:7-8) And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down–that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. IF WE RESIST THE DEVIL, HE WILL FLEE (James 4: 7) Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. WE DO NOT HAVE THE POWER TO RESIST SATAN ON OUR OWN (Jude 9) But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” TO RESIST THE DEVIL, WE MUST PUT ON THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD (Eph 6:10-12) Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Jesus’ own mission statement: “He hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening [of the prison] to them that are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Isa 61:1,2) GOD ALLOWS TEMPTATIONS, BUT ALWAYS PROVIDES AN ESCAPE (1 Cor 10:13) No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. SATAN KNOWS THE SCRIPTURES AND TRIES TO MISUSE THEM As described in Matt 4:3-10 and Luke 4:3-12, during the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, Satan quoted Him Scripture several times. Jesus replied each time with additional Scriptures refuting Satan’s attempts to take things out of context or only use part of a section. (Matt 28:19-20, Lk 9:1-2 and 10:1-3). Too many American Christians have become passive and fearful. Others are satisfied to merely acknowledge the right things and attend church services and activities. This type of lifestyle is quite different from that which Jesus requires of His followers. We must preach and teach about the kingdom of God, focus on the doctrine of Christ, heal the sick and set the captives free. Why is the Holy Spirit referred to as being “holy”?(HOLY: Belonging to, derived from, or associated with a divine power; sacred.) Distinguishes Him from EVIL spirits. SAD FACTS REGARDING THE CHURCH AND THE HOLY SPIRIT A majority (61%) agree that the Holy Spirit is a symbol of Gods presence or power but is not a living entity. (2001) Among the segments of the population more likely than others to deny the existence of the Holy Spirit as a living entity are Catholics (73%), non-Christians (68%), and non-whites (68%). (2001) A majority of all born again Christians reject the existence of the Holy Spirit (52%). (2001) WHY IS THE HOLY SPIRIT IMPORTANT? There is no subject more important in Christianity than that of the Holy Spirit. Unless this is properly understood, a large portion of the Bible, and especially the NT, remains unintelligible. On the other hand, a just view of it will do more than a knowledge of any other particular topic to give harmony, clearness, and consistency to what may be learned to all other matters presented in the Word of God. Despite the importance of knowing the Holy Spirit and His place in the life of a Christian, there is much confusion and superstition in the minds of many people about the Holy Spirit WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT? 1. A person with characteristics 2. NOT, merely an “influence”, or “impersonal force” that emanates from God. 3. We should regard the Holy Spirit as a “He”, not an “it”! I. THE HOLY SPIRIT’S PERSONALITY A. THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS… 1. He “expressly says” that some will depart from the faith - 1 Tim 4:1 2. The Spirit spoke and gave directions to Philip - Acts 8:29 3. He spoke to Peter and gave him charge concerning the Gentiles - Acts 10:19-20 4. He spoke to the brethren at Antioch concerning Paul and Barnabas - Acts 13:1-4 B. THE HOLY SPIRIT TEACHES… 1. He was to teach the apostles all things - Jn 14:26 2. Please note that Jesus consistently refers to the Holy Spirit as “He”, not “it” (implying a personal being, not an impersonal force) - Jn 14:16-17 C. THE HOLY SPIRIT BEARS WITNESS… 1. He was to testify of Jesus - Jn 15:26-27 2. Just as the apostles (who were “personal beings”) would bear witness, so also the Holy Spirit D. THE HOLY SPIRIT GUIDES, HEARS, SPEAKS, TELLS… 1. He would carry on and complete the work started by Jesus - Jn 16:12-13 2. Jesus consistently refers to the Holy Spirit as “He” The Holy Spirit is a real person who came to reside within Jesus Christ’s true followers after Jesus rose from the dead and ascended to heaven (Acts 2). Jesus told His apostles… “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” (Jn 14:16-18) The Holy Spirit is not a vague, ethereal shadow, nor an impersonal force. He is a person equal in every way with God the Father and God the Son. He is considered to be the third member of the Godhead. Jesus said to His apostles… “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matt 28:18-20) God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And all the divine attributes ascribed to the Father and the Son are equally ascribed to the Holy Spirit. When a person becomes born again by believing and receiving Jesus Christ (Jn 1:12-13; Jn 3:3-21), God resides in that person through the Holy Spirit (1Cor 3:16). E. THE HOLY SPIRIT’S PRIMARY ROLE 1. He bears “witness” of Jesus Christ and tells people’s hearts about the truth of Jesus Christ. (Jn 15:26, 16:14). 2. He acts as a Christian’s teacher/guide (1Cor. 2:9-14). 3. He reveals God’s will and God’s truth to a Christian. Jesus told His disciples… “The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” (Jn 14:26) “When He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.” (Jn 16:13) 4. The Holy Spirit was given to live inside those who believe in Jesus, in order to produce God’s character in the life of a believer. In a way that we cannot do on our own, the Holy Spirit will build into our lives love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Gal 5:22-23). Rather than trying to be loving, patient, kind, God asks us to rely on Him to produce these qualities in our lives. Thus Christians are told to walk in the Spirit (Gal 5:25) and be filled with the Spirit (Eph 5:18). 5. The Holy Spirit empowers Christians to perform ministerial duties that promote spiritual growth among Christians (Rom 12; 1Cor 12; Eph 4). 6. The Holy Spirit also performs a function for non-Christians as well. He convicts people’s hearts of God’s truth concerning how sinful we are — needing God’s forgiveness; how righteous Jesus is — He died in our place, for our sins; and God’s eventual judgment of the world and those who do not know Him (Jn 16:8-11). The Holy Spirit tugs on our hearts and minds, asking us to repent and turn to God for forgiveness and a new life. F. THE HOLY SPIRIT FORBIDS… 1. He prevented Paul and his companions from going into certain areas of Asia - Acts 16:6-7 This He did by “forbidding” them, and “not permitting” them, despite their initial efforts G. THE HOLY SPIRIT INTERCEDES… 1. The “Spirit Himself (note Paul’s use of the personal pronoun) makes intercession for us” - Rom 8:26 2. Just as Christ “also makes intercession for us” - Rom 8:34 [All these works of the Holy Spirit manifest personality] II. THE HOLY SPIRIT POSSESSES PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS A. HE HAS A MIND… 1. “the mind of the Spirit” - Rom 8:27 This suggests thinking on His own. B. HE HAS KNOWLEDGE… 1. He “knows the things of God” - 1 Cor 2:11 just as the “spirit of man” (a personal being) knows certain things. He has intellect. C. HE POSSESSES AFFECTION… 1. Paul speaks of “the love of the Spirit” - Rom 15:30 When have you known of an “impersonal force” that could love? He has emotion. D. HE HAS A WILL… 1. “the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills” - 1 Cor 12:11 It was the Holy Spirit Who decided what person received which gift. Again, these are all characteristics of a being possessing intelligence and personality. III. THE HOLY SPIRIT SUFFERS PERSONAL SLIGHTS AND INJURIES A. HE CAN BE GRIEVED… 1. “do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God” - Eph 4:30 He can be made sorrowful through our willful neglect B. HE CAN BE BLASPHEMED… 1. That is, to be spoken evil of, as in attributing His deeds to the works of Satan, the “unpardonable sin” - Matt 12:31-32 C. HE CAN BE INSULTED… 1. One who has “trampled the Son of God underfoot” has also “insulted the Spirit of grace” - Heb 10:29 This is done by sinning “willfully” - Heb 10:26 D. HE CAN BE LIED TO… 1. As Ananias and his wife Sapphira were guilty of doing. Acts 5:3: “…why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit…?” E. HE CAN BE RESISTED… 1. As Stephen charged the Jewish leaders of doing - Acts 7:51 This they did by resisting the message and persecuting the messengers who were inspired by the Holy Spirit. Acts 7: 52-53 In my opinion, much too great an emphasis has been placed on the gift of tongues - so much so that an ungodly caste system of the haves and have-not’s has developed in some groups - despite the promise of Scripture that you shall receive POWER (NOT tongues) when the Spirit comes upon you; power to be a witness (literally, a martyr). 7 Steps to a Beautiful Radiant Face

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By Chantal Terry We all know by now, to achieve beautiful skin, we need a skin regime. Cleanse, tone and moisturize. Sometimes we use a facial mask, or exfoliaters to bring out the best in our skin. BUT, there is also something very important that we need to do but we always tend to neglect. What is it? MASSAGE of course. This facial massage is helpful in promoting blood circulation, draining toxins from the face and stimulating the production of collagen under your skin. Bonus is, it also helps to stimulate some acupressure points along the face. Here is a step by step guide for a more beautiful face: 1) Gently pinch your eyebrows between your thumb and your index fingers. Pinch your eyebrows along from the beginning of your brow till the end. Do it for about 30 times or more if you like. This helps to elevate stress at your eye areas. 2) Apply some pressure by pressing along the entire eyebrow with your index fingers. Repeat this for about 30 times. Steps 1 and 2 helps to reduce dark eye circles too. 3) Lightly pinch the little area between your eyes. Don’t press too hard or you will have a stubborn red mark there. The skin here is very sensitive to the touch. This helps to destress tired eyes especially. You can repeat it for about 10-15 times. 4) Make little circular motions on your temples lightly. Let the circular motions be directed outwards, moving from the insides of your temples which are nearest to the eyes towards your hairline each time. Repeat the circular motions for about 30 times to relief stress, the blues and headaches. 5) Slightly part your mouth like you’re saying ‘O’ then press lightly on the cheeks. Repeat this for 30 times and this helps to stimulate collagen production to keep cheeks uplifted and firm. 6) From the sides of the nose, sweep the face in outward strokes with your fingers. Repeat this for about 30 times too. Make the strokes upwards from the sides of your nose towards the cheekbones gently and dont overpull the skin. This helps to drain toxins and water retention. Also, it helps to elevate sinus blockage. For further sinus relief, lightly rub the areas at the sides of the nose. 7) Run your fingers by applying slight pressure along your entire jawline, starting from your chin till your ears. Repeat for about 30 times. This helps to release stress along the jawline. We are usually unaware of how much tension we apply to the jawline as sometimes we tend to clench our teeth unknowingly. Of course, no beautiful face is complete without the right attitude. Learn how pull off the right attitude at http://beauty-tyrant.blogspot.com/2006/12/tips-to-be-beautiful-and-glamorous.html So, just spend a little as 5 minutes everyday to have that beautiful envious radiant skin, without involving any pain nor money in your pursuit of beauty. How To Look Energetic and Popular to Game Girls at Party & Clubs

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Lex Hitman If you are a regular at party and clubbing scenes, you know exactly that they have a very different matrix than other social gathering place, such as caf. Everything goes very fast and dynamic there that a person whos only been the first time there would find difficult to get along with the environment. And what happens when you spot on a group of beautiful girls dancing quite a distance from your place? Its hard enough to feel belonged there, its even more bizarre to try out your gaming skills on such alien ground. Thats why there are only few people who can generate gaming results in parties. Those who are already in the know would keep gaining and doubling their score cards, leaving the lossy and wallflowers behind. Personally, I dont think there is such thing as a perfect strategy for clubbing scenes. What we often claim as perfect usually only means that it deliver more successes than the other. Even after that, you still need to identify yourself to the strategy youre going to take and improvise as you proceed with it. Just because it works with one people, doesnt say anything that it would do the same for you. However, in my experience, there are at least some basic golden rules that could be easily applied to everyone whos looking to improve their clubbing charisma. Here are some tips to build your energy for party and dance floors: - Come a bit late. Watching people who are already into the music would definitely give you a kick start to get into the same tune. If you arrive before the party begins, youre going to get accustomed to the tension and inactivity that it would be harder to switch into the party mood then. - Greet and gesture the workers as you enter the room. Bouncers, bartenders, dancers, DJs, they are all the owner of the place. Just a simple Hey, wussup! and Looking crowded tonight, would boost your mood even more. You need to build enough momentum so that you can feel as confident as you need. - Start touring the place, talking to anyone interesting. While some people call this as vibing, I call it bouncing as the the idea is to bounce all the spots to have small talk with people you find interesting. You dont need lengthy talks, just three to five exhanges but done almost everywhere. You know youre doing this right when you feel somewhat invincible compared to other mortals according to the simple structure there. Thats what I usually call as the Glossy state. Not only you will be seen as the most popular guy in the room, but you also would have an automatic working momentum that keeps on pushing you into approaching girls until your legs fail you. As simple as this may sound, those three steps above will help you achieve amazing things in your clubbing adventure. Have fun! Tips About Crafts For Small Children

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Charlene Tennant As a former teacher’s aide for grades k-4, I worked with young children on their classroom craft projects along with helping with their reading skills. Much of the work involved preparing the craft areas for each project and getting the materials together. I did a lot of pre-cutting paper strips or shapes and putting out small containers of glue, crayons or whatever was required for the day’s project. This also included handling parts of the project that were too dangerous for the kids, like melting wax crayons or ironing on transfers, etc. When crafting at home with small children it’s also a good idea for the parent to be prepared ahead of time for when the weather is bad or the kids are bored. Start a craft materials stash just as you would for your own craft or sewing projects. It doesn’t have to be large or expensive. Items you might have around the house work well (paper plates, drinking straws, paper or foam egg cartons, a small bag of newspaper strips for Paper Mache, rubber bands, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, cotton balls, construction paper, children’s scissors, white glue, crayons, water colors, markers, etc). You might also want to include a plastic table cloth, aprons and wipes. When you want to spend some quality time with the little ones you will be ready to craft on the spur of the moment. Safety when crafting with small children is just as important as being prepared. It’s just using common sense. No sharp objects that can cut fingers or poke eyes and depending on the age of the child, no tiny items that can cause a choking hazard. Don’t let the kids handle hot items like irons or hot liquids. And make sure all products that they use are non-toxic. I haven’t seen very many small children who don’t taste everything or at least put their hands in their mouths. We want to concentrate on having a good time and not have to worry about what goes into the mouth. Last but not least is the craft itself. Back when I helped in the classroom it was a struggle to come up with new ideas. Most ideas were passed back and forth between the teachers. We modified projects to fit the age group. Many ideas came from the Teachers Resource Center and just plain old brainstorming. Now we have the internet. You can find almost anything if you have time to research and collect. There are many sites dedicated to kid’s crafts. Here’s just one example. While I was looking for ideas for project to do with my grandkids I came across a nice little e-book by Alexandra Martinez called “365 Easy Step-by-Step Kid Crafts”. As the title indicates, she has included 365 craft projects that cover most holidays and general crafting ideas. As a bonus she has included a book of children’s recipes and another book of games and activities. She offers a money back guarantee and free upgrades. I purchased the books myself to have on hand when the kids come to visit. I can print out the projects that I want to use and have patterns ready to cut or color without messing up a printed book or having to go make copies on a copier (which I don’t own). It saves me a lot of time searching for ideas. I really like the recipe for play dough that’s in the recipe book. I could spend a whole day making play dough animals with my grandaughter. She has to keep every one of them until they dry out and have to be thrown out. It sure saves me a lot of money when I can make my own. Whichever craft projects you choose to do with your kids, no matter where you find them, be prepared, keep safety in mind and have lots of fun crafting away. Make the project along with them to show them how it’s done but don’t insist that they do it your way. Let them be creative. Let them know that they have done a GREAT job, even if you have no idea what the did. They may come up with something that’s even better than the original idea. You will be creating happy memories that will, hopefully, instill a love for crafting beautiful things for the rest of their lives. Oh! and don’t forget to take pictures. They’ll look great in your scrapbooking projects. Happy Crafting! Tips about crafts for small children. Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Emily Gleason As a new generation of twenty-somethings reaches marriage age; more and more couples are opting to live together and either delay or entirely forego that long trip down the aisle. This is not surprising considering that many of todays young adults carry deep wounds from a record high divorce rate that plagued their parents generation in the 1980s and 90s. In an attempt to avoid becoming part of a divorce statistic, it is possible that young couples avoid marriage in order to avoid divorce. Unfortunately, the legal consequences of a breakup for unmarried couples can actually be far worse than the legal consequences of divorce. The most effective way to gain the legal benefits of marriage is by getting married, but same-sex couples are denied the legal right to marry in Illinois, and many heterosexual couples are resistant to marriage. Thus, there are steps that Illinois attorneys can take to ensure that cohabiting couples receive most of the legal benefits of marriage. The legal disadvantages of cohabitation When a married couple divorces, each person is generally entitled to 50% of all assets attained during marriage. Co-habiting couples, on the other hand, do not have the luxury of a legal formula to determine what happens to all of their assets when they break up. For example, when a married couple buys a car, only one persons name is on the title, but courts recognize that each person has equal ownership of it, whereas courts would give 100% ownership of a co-habiting couples car to the title holder. There is no assumption that a co-habiting couples assets are jointly owned, and neither person is entitled to anything that they did not specifically pay for or gain title to. The 1970 lawsuit of Hewitt v. Hewitt, 77 Ill 2d 49, 394 NE2d 1204 (1979), is the most recent Illinois Supreme Court case involving the division of assets between non-married cohabitants. The Hewitts lived together outside of marriage, but Ms. Hewitt changed her name and the couple presented themselves as husband and wife. The couple agreed that Mr. Hewitt would be the primary wage earner while Ms. Hewitt fulfilled all other tasks involved in maintaining the household. When the couple broke up, the Illinois Supreme Court decided that because Mr. Hewitt supported the household financially, Ms. Hewitt had no right to any of the couples assets. If the facts in the Hewitt case were different, and instead of breaking up, Mr. Hewitt died, technically, the result would have been the same. Ms. Hewitt could have been served with an eviction notice from Mr. Hewitts relatives and been forced to leave her home. Cohabitation is considered socially undesirable in Illinois, and thus far, courts have not gone out of their way to extend the benefits of marriage to cohabitants. Because the result of breakups and death among cohabiting couples can be unfair, it is important for unmarried couples to hire attorneys and secure the legal benefits of marriage. Contracts for cohabitants The lesson from Hewitt v. Hewitt is that cohabiting parties should form written contracts regarding living arrangements. One simple written document drafted by an attorney could have changed the result of the entire case for Ms. Hewitt. Although written contracts and wills cannot provide all of the legal benefits of marriage, such as social security benefits based on a spouses earnings or loss of consortium based on a spouses damages in a lawsuit, an effective attorney can ensure that cohabitants receive most of the legal benefits of marriage. Contracts can indicate that all assets attained during cohabitation are joint assets, to be divided equally in the event of a break up. Furthermore, written contracts between unmarried couples can establish each persons services to the household, such as who makes money and who is responsible for household management. Estate planning is another step that cohabitants should consider to give members of a couple rights to one anothers property and health care in the event of death or serious medical illness. Ordinarily, when one member of a cohabiting couple becomes ill or dies, the other has no right to make serious medical decisions or inherit the others estate. Typically, the deceased partners estate is left in the hands of his or her family, which can be particularly troublesome when the decedents relatives hate the other partner. Unmarried couples risk ugly battles in the event of death or breakups, with no assistance from Illinois courts unless their relationships are governed by contracts. By drafting contracts and wills, attorneys can provide cohabiting couples most of the legal benefits of marriage. Emily Gleason is a law student at John Marshall in Chicago. Last Year Physician Resident Checklist

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Jim Fred Here is a last year resident checklist not to forget: LICENSING: Licensing is becoming increasingly complex as identity and medical fraud become more common. Therefore don’t wait till the last minute to start the process. The AMA reports that physicians should expect the process to take at least 60 days, and should plan their career moves accordingly. The highest volume of licensure applications is received between the months of April and September, when physicians with school-age children are making changes and residents who didn’t plan ahead are applying for licenses. Therefore the standard approval timeframes posted on a state medical board’s website don’t apply during this period and expect the process to take longer and act accordingly. Having a permanent address during residency enhances the process for licensing and other credentialing. Keeping your state licenses active is also very important. It makes getting additional state licenses much easier. Most state boards require verification of all licenses, regardless of status, before they will issue a new license. About half require you to submit a written statement explaining why you let any license expire or lapse. DEA: (Drug Enforcement agency) Unless you are a radiologist, you must have a DEA license to practice medicine anywhere in the US. You will need it to write any form of prescription. Your residency program may have a blanket hospital DEA license covering residents. This covers you during your training, however, you will eventually need a personal DEA. Having a permanent address and specified worksite in the same state as your original medical license makes the process much simpler. and you may be eligible for reduced student rates. UPIN: (Unique Physician/Practitioner Identification Number) As with your DEA, we recommend that you apply for a UPIN during your residency for some of the reasons mentioned previously; having a permanent address, having plenty of time to complete the process etc. The UPIN is assigned by CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services). It is asix-character alphanumeric code identifying you as a Medicare provider. Each individual practitioner receives one UPIN, regardless of the number of practice settings he or she works in. You will keep this UPIN throughout your Medicare affiliation, regardless of the state or states you practice in. CMS uses the UPIN to identify the ordering and referring physician, to aggregate payment and utilization information for individual practitioners, to ensure compliance with contractor recommendations for sanctions, and to validate duplicate services. BOARD CERTIFICATION: Board certification is evidence that you have successfully completed an approved educational and training program and passed a rigorous evaluation process. It demonstrates that you are prepared to provide quality patient care in your specialty. We highly recommend you get board certified because employers are increasingly demanding that you have it. It’s also just as important that you keep your certification current. All certificates issued by members of the ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties) are time limited. The limits range from six to 10 years, depending on the board and specialty. How To Impress At An Interview, And Land That Job

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Laura Adams Candidates experience and credentials, as detailed in the resume, are most often the frequently used criteria for determining which job applicants are deserving of a personal interview. Ultimately, though, the hiring decision is going to be heavily based upon the candidates performance in the interview and their value to the organization. To impress an interviewer, you have to be able to distinguish yourself from other candidates and be prepared to ’sell’ your qualifications to the interviewer. How can you do this? Present a polished professional image Remember that professional companies are looking to hire professional individuals, not the beach bum who just shook the loose sand from his hair. Dress conservatively in a well-fitting suit and keep jewelry, makeup, and fragrances to a minimum. Its also important to always take a shower, brush your teeth, and comb your hair before an interview as well to present to clean, polished image. Spend some time to research the organization prior to the interview Doing outside research on your own time to prepare for the interview demonstrates your commitment to hard work and your sincere interest in the organization. Study up on the company’s products and services, industry, target market, annual sales, structure, and any other key information. Managers will be impressed by your research. Prepare specific examples of how your skills and experience make you a strong fit for the organizations needs Practice answering tough, directed questions about your experience and be prepared to draw colorations between your experience and that needs of the organization. For example, if the position requires strong analytical skills, you should have example ready to demonstrate your strong analytical skills. Have you faced any challenges that forced you to think quickly on your feet? How do you go about evaluate alternatives when you have to justify a decision on a project? Prepare and ask intelligent questions about the company and position Your research on the organization will also come in handy when it comes time to formulate a series of intelligent questions you want answered. Since the interviewing process is an evaluation tool for both the individual and the organization, it is in your best interest to gather as much information about the potential opportunity as possible. Asking well thought-out questions shows that you are serious about the opportunity at hand and indicates the level of your knowledge about the company to the interviewer. Pay attention to your body language. You want to exude self-confidence and poise during an interview. Maintain eye contact, smile pleasantly, and keep your body attentive but relaxed throughout the meeting. Avoid fidgeting, clearing your throat, and breaking eye contacts as these are all signs of an anxious person. Conclude the meeting by thanking the interviewer for his time and shaking his hand. End the interview on a strong positive note by thanking and acknowledging the time the interviewer spent meeting with you. Its important that interviewer know that you value his time - after all, he could just have easily been doing something else. Write a quick Thank You message to the individual(s) who interviewed you. It only takes a few minutes to pen a Thank You note to an interviewer, but the gesture speaks volumes about your professionalism and the importance you place on good customer service. If you treat the interviewer with gratitude and respect, you are likely to treat your co-workers and customers equally well. Laura Adams is a qualified careers advisor with 11 years experience. Keeping the Devil at Bay

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Bruce Burnett Neyther falling sickness, neyther devyll, wyll infest or hurt one in that place where a bay tree is, wrote Thomas Lupton in 1575, referring to the putative ability of the bay laurel to offer protection from misfortune. The Roman emperor, Tiberius (42 BC 37 AD), would always take refuge under his bed wearing a crown of bay leaves during a thunderstorm as he was convinced this would protect him from the thunder and lightning. The death of a bay tree was also historically regarded as a portent of evil or pending disaster. In Richard II, Shakespeare wrote: Tis thought the king is dead; we will not stay. The bay trees in our country are all witherd. In mythology, bay leaves were worn as an amulet to ward off evil and were burned and scattered as a strewing herb in exorcism and purification rituals. Leaves placed under a pillow are supposed to induce inspiration and prophetic dreams. One old legend maintains that if a wish is written on a bay leaf, which is then burned, the wish will come true. In Greek mythology, Apollo the sun god fell in love with Daphne who had been pierced by one of Cupids darts causing her to dislike Apollo. She spurned his advances and Daphnes father, Peneus, changed her into a bay tree to help her escape. Apollo knelt before the tree and declared it forever sacred. Henceforth he wore a crown of laurel leaves on his head in remembrance of his unrequited passion for Daphne. From this myth, somewhat curiously, the bay came to symbolize glory and honor. The ancient Greeks crowned Olympic winners, scholars and poets with bay wreaths and they are still today placed on Boston Marathon winners. In the garden the bay tree is a tender perennial and extended freezing temperatures will kill it. Although the bay will grow to 20 meters in its native Mediterranean habitat, in a temperate or cooler climate it is best grown in a pot where it can be moved to a protected area during the coldest months. Bay laurel is used medicinally primarily to treat upper digestive tract disorders, having a similar effect as spearmint. It is also used to ease muscular aches and pains. The following recipe for Laurel Bay Mint Bath will ease and relax tired muscles after a hard day: cup of dried mint leaves 1 cup of chopped bay leaves 1 tsp. Coconut oil 1 tsp. Almond extract. Toss all the ingredients in a mixing bowl then place in a piece of cheesecloth, one-foot square. Tie with string and submerge it under very hot running bath water. Allow the bath water to cool to a comfortable temperature while the bouquet infuses. Relax in the bath for at least 30 minutes, adding warm water to maintain a comfortable temperature. Bay leaves are an effective insect repellant and can be placed in closets and drawers and even into a flour canister to deter weevils. Unlike most herbs, bay is stronger semi-fresh than completely dried, with its flavor and aroma peaking between three and seven days after picking. Bay contributes more aroma than flavor to food and differs again from most herbs by not losing its flavor with long cooking. Bay leaves should be removed from dishes before serving. A dinner guest will not remember your culinary skills if he or she gets a bay leaf stuck in their throat. Bouquet garni is de rigueur in French cuisine and bay leaves are de rigueur in bouquet garni. For convenience prepare your bouquet garni in bulk ahead of time so you have lots on hand. Following is a convenient recipe for this:Bouquet garni 12 whole bay leaves; 12 tsp. whole celery seeds; 24 whole cloves; 36 peppercorns; 12 Tbsp. dried parsley; 6 tsp. thyme. Divide all the ingredients equally on to 12, four-inch square pieces of cheesecloth. Tie with heavy white kitchen twine, leaving a long string for easy removal. The taste of bay is tangy and slightly peppery. It enhances the flavor of just about everything, but especially soups, stews and tomato-based dishes. Pot roasts and shellfish should almost never be served without bay. It will even improve the taste of custard sauces if the milk is scalded with one or two leaves.
