Food Combining for Indigestion

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Chet Day I’d like to share with you some basic food combining rules as set forth by the late Dr. Herbert Shelton many years ago. A couple of comments before we get to the rules. First, the medical establishment says you’re wasting your time if try food combining to help gas and indigestion problems. Instead of paying attention to the types of foods you eat (combine) together, the folks in white coats claim you can cure your gas and indigestion problems by popping pills or swallowing some prescription goop. Unfortunately, besides being expensive and unnatural, these prescription and over-the-counter “cure” of course have side effects that are often as bad as the gas or indigestion you’re trying to solve. Well, to the naysayers who roll their eyes and turn up their noses to food combining, I have a very simple test. Try the natural approach of food combining for one week, and if your gas and indigestion problems don’t improve dramatically, I’d be quite surprised. Basic Food Combining Rules * Eat acids and starches at separate meals. Acids neutralize the alkaline medium required for starch digestion and the result is fermentation and indigestion. * Eat protein foods and carbohydrate foods at separate meals. Protein foods require an acid medium for digestion. * Eat but one kind of protein food at a meal. * Eat proteins and acid foods at separate meals. The acids of acid foods inhibit the secretion of the digestive acids required for protein digestion. Undigested protein putrefies in bacterial decomposition and produces some potent poisons. * Eat fats and proteins at separate meals. Some foods, especially nuts, are over 50% fat and require hours for digestion. * Eat sugars (fruits) and proteins at separate meals. * Eat sugars (fruits) and starchy foods at separate meals. Fruits undergo no digestion in the stomach and are held up if eaten with foods that require digestion in the stomach. * Eat melons alone. They combine with almost no other food. * Desert the desserts. Eaten on top of meals they lie heavy on the stomach, requiring no digestion there, and ferment. Bacteria turn them into alcohols and vinegars and acetic acids. Food combining works for a lot people. It’s free, it’s simple, and you can do it yourself. Who could ask for a better gas and/or indigestion aid? Chet Day keeps a close eye on the wild and wacky world of the natural health circus. Marketing To Women: Expand Your Influence And Skyrocket Your Sales

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Leah B. Carson If women make up a significant portion of your target market, one of the simplest and most overlooked - ways to make it easy for them to choose your product is to keep in mind this one characteristic that is common among virtually all female consumers When deciding whether or not to purchase a product or service, virtually all women stop to consider what effect their purchase will have on those around them. Always remember when youre marketing to women, that women are inclusive. Whether husbands, parents, sisters, children, friends, bosses and virtually everyone else in their inner circle realize it or not, women think about them as part of the pre-purchase process. In their book Don’t Think Pink Lisa Johnson and Andrea Learned describe this as constituent-driven decision making. Will these heels make me taller than Mike? Is this new flooring going to trip Mom when she visits? How will changing my investment strategy affect our plans to buy Lindseys car in April? Which week will my vacation least impact everyone at the office? Womens heads race with questions like this constantly. My mother is a perfect example, but you need a little background for this to make sense. Back in 1999, my husband Joe had brain surgery (hes doing very well, thanks!) which slightly impaired his left side of his body. Now, although we live over live over 800 miles away and visit less than once a year, Joe played a prominent role in Moms decision making when she shopped for new sofas and chairs. For her, one of the make-or-break factors when buying furniture was Will my son-in-law be able to sit and stand easily? If making a decision on a sofa based on an annual visit from your son-in-law who lives 800 miles away isn’t constituent-driven decision making, I don’t know what is! What you need to know about constituent-driven decision making is this: If you fail to address how the benefits of your product or service ripple out beyond her personal experience, then youre missing a critical component in your sales message. After youve fully demonstrated how your product or service will make life easier for her, go a little further. Let her know how her loved ones and friends will benefit, even tangentially, after she makes her purchase. Doing so will help you stand out among your competition and just may win you a lifelong customer! Leah B. Financing a Bariatric Surgery

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Eddie Tobey Bariatric surgery for weight loss may be a life-saving procedure, but it is not cheap. Although a number of insurance companies cover the procedure, many individuals find that their medical insurance providers balk at the cost. Most insurance companies require a letter outlining a patients weigh-loss history and the medical necessity for the surgery before they will even consider financing the procedure. Even with a carefully crafted letter, many insurance companies will refuse to authorize the surgery. If this happens, the patient should not give up hope, since most insurance providers give patients an opportunity to appeal a denial. Most insurance companies require that patients appeal within 30-60 days after receiving a denial of coverage. The bariatric surgery insurance Appeal Letter should include information disputing the insurance providers reason for denial. As a last result, patients may need an attorney to help prove the medical necessity of the procedure. For patients with no insurance, there are financial alternatives available. A number of financial institutions offer financing specifically for healthcare expenses such as co-payments, deductibles, and procedures not covered by insurance, including bariatric surgery. Some offer no-interest, same-as-cash plans as well as extended payment plans. Some bariatric surgery centers contract with finance companies to offer financial assistance to patients who are interested in this type of surgery but do not have the insurance to pay for it. Finally, a patient can take out a home equity loan to finance the procedure. Those patients who do elected to pay for bariatric surgery themselves should keep in mind that it may be tax deductible, since it is considered a major medical expense. A consultation with an accountant may e in order. Model Building To Great Family Bonding

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Joshua Poyoh Model building can be a great way for fathers and sons to create family bonding. This is one hobby that they can continue for years to come as they explore the different modeling projects they can do together. Years ago, the model selection at a store might have consisted of a few different car models to choose from. In this day of age, the possibilities are just about limitless. Model building has blossomed into a diverse mixture of traditional models and new innovative designs. You can find boat models, figure models, and even remote control car models where you build the model from the ground up and proudly race it around the neighborhood for the world to see. Realizing that your hard work went into building it makes the car that much more fun. If architecture is something you are interested in, you can find scale building models to keep you busy and even teach you a little something about the industry. These can be a perfect choice for a young person interested in pursuing a career in building or engineering. Of course it won’t teach you how to build a real building but it can be a lot of fun and offer some sound examples of how architects actually go about creating model buildings and turning them into a reality. Model building can also be a fun way to create miniature rockets that really work, or aircraft models that really fly. Children often want to explore this as part of their interest in science in school. Model building together as a family creates a bond and offers a great way to spend quality time. If you are not into model building when it comes to creating cars, trucks, or airplanes, you might want to try something a little less directed like building with plastic blocks. Although not the traditional kind of model building, these things do offer a certain amount of building capability that is fun and not time consuming. These are also great ways to get young children involved in the sport of model building. All in all, model building has been known as a man’s sport per say, but more and more women are getting involved with it. After all it can be very satisfying to build something from scratch and call it your own, something no one else in the world has one of the same even if it comes from a model building kit. Everyone puts their own special touch on their projects and usually end up altering the design in one form or another because of ideas that might spring up during construction. This is just another reason model building is so popular, because no matter what project you take on, you know it will be a one of a kind creation. Model building is a great hobby that can opens up the communication channel. It encourages interaction between the hobbyists. It also serve as a great educational tool for the children as they learn about more about modeling. Bird Flu Pandemic Planning for Faith Based and Non-Profit Organizations

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By TJ Smith How would a bird flu pandemic affect your faith-based or non-profit organization? Currently avian influenza has been mainly in Asia but it is spreading rapidly to other countries. Worldwide about 165 people have become ill (mainly from close contact with infected poultry) and about 88 have died. At this time bird flu is not passed from human to human but scientists fear it will mutate into a form or mix with normal influenza viruses that will allow it to pass easily from person to person. When that happens the chance of a world pandemic will greatly increase with catastrophic results. It may not happen in the near future but health experts say it will happen and it is only a matter of time. A bird flu pandemic lasting a year could cost the global economy $800 billion dollars, leave millions around the world ill and kill anywhere from 5 million to 500 million people world wide. It would have a huge impact on your organization, your members and the community you serve. It is estimated that 30-60% of the work force would be out sick. People could be housebound under quarantines for months at a time. Public gatherings such as worship services would be reduced or eliminated all together to help prevent the spread of bird flu. How would you continue to serve your members? As with any organization, you need to be aware of the risks and have a worst-case scenario contingency plan in place before you actually need it. Some of the questions you may need to start asking are: How would you continue to offer services without contributing to the spread of bird flu? Worship services may need to be reduced or eliminated for several months. Weekly group meetings including bible studies, boy scouts, etc. would also need to be eliminated. How would you handle a loss of contributions when members are at home sick and not working? How long could your organization last without income? How would you continue to communicate with your members? What type of communication network between members and staff could you set up? How would you handle your community outreach programs, such as meals on wheels and other programs where you are dealing with many people? Members of the community, who are elderly, vision impaired, wheelchair bound and those already homebound, would need someone to continue checking on them and help them if they become ill. Members of society who are slipping through the cracks now may be the hardest hit. The need for services could become overwhelming. Members will be undergoing tremendous stress in relation to illness, loss of work and income, family members illness, being housebound (cabin fever), and death. The services you can offer may be stretched to the limit. There could be food and water shortages, utility outages and social unrest. Members who were not prepared before hand would need help with their daily needs. There would be an increase in people dying. How would you handle the additional services? How would you administer to those dying at home? What about key employees? Who can fill in if they are out sick? Can you call upon additional volunteers? How would a bird flu pandemic impact your overseas mission work? What other community services are you offering that may be affected? Daycare centers along with schools would probably be closed. You may need to open your doors to shelter the sick or take care of the homeless. You may need to help your community with social services that are no longer available. During a pandemic, everyones faith, resilience and core beliefs will be put to the test. Your best defense is to stay informed and updated, keep your members informed about the bird flu and by starting to plan now for a possible bird flu pandemic, you will be in a better position to continue to offer your members the services they require and the answers they need. Do You Know What Essentials Oils Are

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Louise Forrest Plants are the basis of essential oils; these oils in living plants are the immune system of the plant. The oils are extracted from the bark, flower, fruit, grass, leaf, needle, rind, root, seed and wood of various plants and sold in a 100% concentration. Extraction methods make then very highly concentrated. Small amounts are all that you need for most recipes. Contrary to their name, essential oils do not feel oily; most are clear, but some are amber colored. It is important to understand that absolute oils are not the same as essential oils. Various solvents are used during extraction for absolute oils and these oils are used for making fragrances. Extraction may be by steam (or water), expression, or supercritical CO2. These methods each have distinct processes and reasons for using them. Steam: this is the purest and most popular method for extraction plant oils. Plants are steamed in a pressurized container. As the steam pushes through the plant, the oils are evaporated as everything cools, the oils return to their liquid form and are able to be collected. Expression: this method is less popular simply because it cannot be used with most plants; only oils that are locked in the peel of citrus fruits can be extracted by this method. Citrus peels, which are infused with much oil, are pressed. This literally squeezes all liquid from the peel and this liquid must be filtered to collect the oil. Supercritical CO2: this method utilizes carbon dioxide (CO2) in the extraction process and is used to extract oils which emanate the truest fragrance for the plant. Therapeutic grade essential oils are distilled with low pressure and low temperatures, according to the plant that is being used. These oils are used in aroma therapy to achieve various psychological effects. For instance, lavender is considered relaxing while peppermint is invigorating. Inhalation or topical application are the main ways that aromatherapy employs to achieve the desired effects. Important notes: Essential oils should not be used on young children and pregnant women. Essential oils should essential oils be ingested, some are highly toxic. Essential oils should be kept away from eyes (in case or contact, blot with olive oil and rinse well Essential oils: How Can You Use Them? Home use of essential oils usually consists of bath additives and topical application (which may be through use in organic skin care or though massage using organic products). Essential oils (like lavender) used in your diffuser can create a calming atmosphere for everyone in your house. Effects from essential oils usually last about four hours. As a bath additive, use an oil that produces a certain effect, for instance, a morning bath may have rosemary as an added oil because rosemary is stimulating. A mere 6 drops of essential oil to your bathwater is enough. Remember that the oils are very highly concentrated. Topical application through organic skin care is very popular today because many people are making their own skin care treatments at home using organic ingredients. This approach to skin care is a return to yesteryear with a twist. We have learned so much about skin and this knowledge added to ideas about skin care from much simpler times give organic skin care a step above skin care lines that boast many man made chemicals. The addition of essential oils to the organic systems gives you wonderful psychological effects that are not available through most large commercial lines. If you are currently using a ready to use organic skin care line that does not feature essential oils as ingredients in the line, contact the manufacturer before you try adding them. There may be reasons that the manufacturer has opted against the oils, and you need to know about possible conflicts in ingredients. Topical application through organic massage emollients is usually a simple mixture of a preferred organic essential oil (usually a calming oil) to an organic carrier oil. A carrier oil is simply a vegetable oil rich in nutrients. Many of the carrier oils are extracted through expression. Jojoba is one of the most popular carrier oils (apricot kernel, grape seed, and olive are just a few of the others). For massage, use about 6 drops of essential oil to 1 ounce of carrier oil. If olive oil is your choice, it is wise to dilute this with another carrier, for example, you would add 6 drops essential oil to 1/2 ounce olive oil and 1/2 ounce jojoba. This is because of olive oils strong scent. Leave Your Job on Good Terms and Save Yourself Regret

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Heather Eagar The exit interview is not a time to burn bridges with your old company. It has become a very common ritual throughout corporate America, and the idea behind it is to find out from departing staff members, when they no longer have to worry about protecting jobs, exactly what things at the company can be improved upon. The interview is deigned to be a tool for making a company more efficient and a better place to work. However, many employees who are leaving an organization use this as a time to vent frustrations they may have felt. They see it as a personal gripe session, and loose inhibitions, sometimes venting personal ad homonym attacks against co-workers, and especially against former supervisors and bosses. This is never a wise idea. Dale Carnegie and other personal growth gurus have told business people for many years that it is never good to burn bridges and offend someone when you could just as easily avoid it. It comes down to the old saying, you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Keep that saying in mind before the exit interview. Remember that if you make personal attacks they will be seen as such by the people who read the interview report. If you have genuine suggestions for improvement, your case could be weakened by making personal attacks. You dont really gain anything from attacking or bad mouthing the people you used to work with or work for anyway, and you may regret saying something in anger later on when you are thinking more clearly. Use the interview as a constructive tool, with good intentions. The company you used to work for did, after all, provide you with a way of making a living for the time you spent with them. Granted, you provided services to them that they needed. And, they paid you a salary or wages. Hopefully it was a fair exchange. If you have honest concerns, then the interview can be constructive. For example, one reporter for a local weekly newspaper stressed that the computers being used were old and out of date, and that the firewall software used was ineffective. The system had suffered attacks of computer viruses in the past, and it was obvious to the reporter that the managing editor was not computer literate enough to understand how to fix the problem. The reporter knew that the publisher and the business manager would both read the exit interview report, so she carefully and diplomatically worded her comments, showing that buying new computers and new software would save the newspaper money in the long run. By wording it carefully during her exit interview she got her ideas across to the appropriate people, and they took her comments seriously because she had nothing to gain and nothing to loose, and seemed to be reporting this situation for the good of the newspaper and staff. In this manner the exit interview benefited everyone involved. Are you guilty of sabotaging your own job search along with the opportunity to earn more money? How Does Phentermine Work? Learn Pros & Cons Of Phentermine For Weight Loss

Monday, January 21st, 2008

By Ian Mason Phentermine, like many other prescription drugs, works with chemicals called neurotransmitters in your brain. It actually stimulates your neuron bundles to release a particular group of neurotransmitters known as catecholamines, these include dopamine, epinephrine (formally known as adrenalin), and norepinephrine (noradrenalin). These neurotransmitters signal a fight or flight response in your body which, in turn, puts a halt to the hunger signal. As a result, you lose your appetite because your brain doesnt receive the hunger message. This drop in appetite is perhaps due to phentermines affects on leptin levels in the brain. It is theorized that phentermine can raise levels of leptin which signal satiety. It is also theorized that increased levels of the catecholamines are partially responsible for halting another chemical messenger know as neuropeptide Y. This chemical initiates eating, decreases energy expenditure, and increases fat storage. What’s a Neurotransmitter, anyway? Neurotransmitters are chemicals in your nervous system and brain. They act as messengers, relaying electrical messages between the cells (neurons) of the nervous system or brain. Some people have naturally low levels of neurotransmitters. This condition may lead to diseases such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and obesity, and others. Prescription drugs work by moving neurotransmitters from one place to another, but do nothing to increase the supply of neurotransmitters in the nervous system or brain. These drugs trick your brain into thinking there are more neurotransmitters than there actually are. Because of this, your brain slows down the production of neurotransmitters. How Can I Improve The Benefits Of Phentermine? To learn more about how to help your body produce higher amounts of neurotransmitters, see the Phentermine tolerance report I have compiled: Phentermine Tolerance Report If anyone has anything to add about how Phentermine works, please do! Going Beyond A 4×6 Model Train Layout

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

By B. Murphy On a 4′ x 8′ table you can handle every layout possible on a 4′ by 6′ table, with plenty of other variations. There are also many interesting layouts that can’t possibly be managed on a 4′ x 6′. Of these, one of the most popular is the Figure Eight, to which you can add a siding or two if you want. Another good 4′ x 8′ layout consists of two connected circles. There is a lot of variety here, but even more is possible when your table can be a little wider. Five by nine feet is a popular size. This is the size of a regulation ping-pong table. Most lumber yards don’t carry plywood panels of these dimensions. They can usually special order panels made specifically for ping-pong tables, 5′ x 9′, but they come in only 3/4″ thickness, which is heavier than you need. They’re also fairly expensive compared with other plywood panels. None of the wallboards are supplied in this size. You can build your table of tongue-and-groove fir or pine, and make it any size you want. Or you can add on either side of a regular four-foot-wide plywood panel a strip six inches wide, attached with shelf brackets, to bring the width of your board up to five feet. You might consider this possibility when examining layouts that will fit a 5′ x 9′table. Layouts with grades of enough height to allow one track to pass under another are exciting, but inclines must be fairly steep, even a 5′ x 9′ table, although it can easily be done with the power and traction found in the latest locomotives. Some train manufacturers also put out trestle sets, each trestle a little higher than the next one, so that you can make one track elevated above another easily. While these may not be as realistic as graded landscaping, they enable you to have more variety of operation and layout before you reach the stage of building scenery and sculpting your own bit of earth. Regardless, there’s plenty to keep the new builder of a model railroad busy and happy, even when he works on a small table. In addition to the laying of track in a chosen pattern and the running of trains over it, there are accessories, buildings, signals and lots more. And in each of these categories there are so many possibilities that you may have a hard time deciding which to get or make first. This decision will be easier after youhave done some thinking about the nature and special character of your private railroad empire.
